Hotel Wailuku: Two Opportunities To Stop It

Proposed Hotel Wailuku

UPDATE 1/26/2021

Good news! Maui Planning Commission recommended approval of the ordinance, and will forward itʻs recommendation to the Maui County Council. We will let you know when that comes up.
Also, mahalo for all of the GoFundMe contributions so far. We have raised $865 toward our goal of $5,000 to help offset our legal expenses.
Stay tuned. Together we are making a difference!

In early 2020, Maui Tomorrow Foundation and the Wailuku Good Government Coalition filed a lawsuit challenging the authority of the Maui Redevelopment Agency (MRA) to make land use decisions in Wailuku. This was brought about by the possibility that the MRA would approve the proposed 6-story Hotel Wailuku in the heart of historic Wailuku town.

We are making good progress, thanks to our community’s efforts!

As a result of our lawsuit, Maui County agreed to propose an ordinance that would take this authority away from the MRA. If the ordinance is adopted by the Maui County Council, MRA will be able to make a recommendation, but will no longer make the decision to grant or deny the zoning variances necessary for approval of the hotel.

What’s next?

Coming up, there are TWO important opportunities for you to support these efforts:

  1. MAKE A GIFT of $5 or more to help offset the legal fees that we have had to pay to get this far. We are hoping to raise $5,000. To help out, please go to our GoFundMe campaign page.
  2. TESTIFY at a hearing before the Maui Planning Commission on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. The commission will forward its recommendation to the Maui County Council. You can see the agenda and find links to join the meeting here.

Historic Wailuku is one of the last refuges from tourism, and Maui doesn’t need any more hotels. Please stand with us to protect Maui’s quality of life.

Mahalo!
