An Opportunity to Protect South Maui’s Future

If you care about the future of South Maui, this is a huge opportunity to make a difference, from Māʻalaea to Mākena.

The South Maui community planning process is getting underway. The Planning and Sustainable Land Use Committee (PSLU) of the Maui County Council has announced that applications are being accepted for residents of the South Maui community planning area to apply to be appointed to the South Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC).

Applicants do not have to be experts in planning, but they should have a good sense of the strengths of the community and what changes would help to improve the quality of life in South Maui. They should also be prepared to make a commitment of time to read relevant materials in advance of the meetings, to listen to testimony from interested members of the public, and to deliberate over proposed policies and land use designations for the plan.

The CPAC will meet over a 6-month period. Their recommendations will then be forwarded to the Maui Planning Commission, whose comments will go to the County Council. The Council will then make the final decisions about the content of the updated community plan.

If you live in South Maui (see map below) and are excited by this opportunity to help shape its future, please consider applying! If you know someone who would be great for this role, please pass it on!

The application deadline is June 30th at 4:30 PM. The application can be:

  • emailed to PSLU.committee@mauicounty.us;
  • mailed to 200 S. High Street, Wailuku, HI, 96793; or
  • hand-delivered to the South Maui District Office at 1305 North Holopono, Suite 9, Kihei, HI, 96753.

At the bottom of the second page of the application, under BOARD/COMMISSION PREFERENCES, you would write in “South Maui CPAC.”

The application is available here.

Join us for “Maui Tomorrow: How You Can Make a Difference” on June 16th at 6:00pm.

This will be the latest in our series of online webinars, “Tools for the ʻĀina Protector,” which empowers the community to safeguard what makes Maui “no ka ʻoi.”  In this 90-minute educational Zoom session, we’ll hear from community leaders Lucienne de Naie and Dick Mayer about their past successes in protecting Mauiʻs future. Despite what seemed at the time to be impossible odds, weʻll learn what actions they took that led to victory. We’ll also cover the upcoming South Maui Community Plan process, and discuss how you can make a difference in the outcome. The webinar will feature community members who have been close to the process, including Kai Nishiki, who served as Chair of the West Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee, and Maui Tomorrow Foundationʻs executive director Albert Perez. Attendees will walk away with increased knowledge and clear, actionable steps they can take to make a difference.
