Planning Commission Approves Variance for Hotel “School”

From Maui News article by Chris Hamilton

A mainland entrepreuner got permission to operate a school/spa/hotel in Makawao’s Fred Baldwin Memorial Home. It will become the Lumeria Maui educational retreat.  Critics called it “a luxury boutique hotel” and it can accomodate  48 guests.

“I don’t think this is a hotel because there is this educational aspect,” said Planning Department Director Will Spence.

“I absolutely view this as a hotel,” Lynch said.

Kula resident Dick Mayer said the project was “spot zoning.”
