GENERAL PLAN UPDATE (MAUI ISLAND PLAN: CHAPTER 2 (HERITAGE RESOURCES)

The General Plan Committee of the Maui County Council will be updating/revising Chapter 2 (Heritage Resources) of the Maui Island Plan which includes the following sections:

  1. Cultural, Historical, and Archaeological Resources
  2. Shoreline, Reefs, and Nearshore Waters
  3. Watersheds, Streams, and Wetlands
  4. Wildlife and Natural Areas
  5. Scenic Resources

They will review the text of each section first, then review the Goals, Objectives, and Policies of that section next.

They will pick up the discussion again on Tuesday, July 26th beginning with Watersheds, Streams, and Wetlands, Matrix number 135 ( see The three column Matrix). Then they will move on to the next section..Wildlife and Natural Areas, and so forth.

The Public can testify at this meeting on anything that has to do with the text, policies, goals and objectives of Chapter 2 Heritage Resources. But they will only discussed in committee items beginning from Matrix number 135 forward and the narrative/text for the sections on Wildlife and Scenic Resources. They already reviewed the text for the Watershed section.

Written testimony can be sent via email.

If you are interested in doing either, which is highly recommended, the following attachments have been already sent to you are to assist you:

  1.  A copy of the Text/narrative of Chapter 2 – Maui Island Plan Heritage Resources.
  2. A template you can follow to help you email written comments  regarding suggestions you may have for tweaking the text. Suggestions that are simple and blend in well with what is already written are more likely to be accepted by the planning dept and added to the existing text. Bigger changes may require a lengthier written explanation of your reasons for recommending the change.
Also included are press releases regarding the role of the General Plan committee.
  3. The three column Matrix that this committee will be using at the meeting for discussing and making revisions, if any, to the Goals, Objectives, and Policies of each section.

This committee is chaired by Council Member Baisa. What she wants from the public are specific suggestions for revisions of the text, policies, goals and objectives of Chapter 2 Heritage Resources, Maui Island Plan. If you testify on any items outside of this context, you will be wasting your time and their time.

This very, very important chapter is the heart and soul of the Maui Island Plan (MIP). The final approved version of the MIP will guide the policies and decisions that the County makes for land use decision etc, for the next 20 years. This meeting is where the rubber hits the road. This is where your input can make a big difference for the future of Maui.
