The County Charter establishes the structure and organization of the government of the County of Maui, and can deeply impact our future. Every ten years, the Mayor and the Council appoint an eleven member Charter Commission to review the operation of the County and propose amendments or draft a new Charter.
This process has begun again, and there is a public meeting this Thursday, October 21st, at 9:00am (which will review charter proposals in the area of Planning, known as “Theme G”). The decisions made in this area have great potential to impact our island’s future land use decisions and how we experience our communities and local places.
***This is an opportunity for you to weigh in and have your voices heard!***
For Thursday’s meeting, you can testify (written or oral during the virtual meeting) in support of the proposals you like, propose new language for those you’d like to clarify, or share why a proposal would negatively affect you and your community.

WRITTEN TESTIMONY: Email written testimony to, charter.commission@mauicounty.gov , with”Attention: Charter Commission” in the subject line or FAX to (808) 270-7152 at least two business days prior to the meeting to ensure distribution to Commission members. This means before 9:00am on Tuesday, October 19th.
Public testimony will be taken at the meeting as determined by the Chair. Testimony will be limited to a maximum of three (3) minutes. Testifiers via video are asked to sign-up using the Chat function by sending a Direct Message to the Commission Secretary, and are requested to provide your full name, the agenda item number on which you will be testifying, and contact information.
