On December 3rd, the Maui County Council passed Bill 148, which would establish a Moratorium on new Transient Accommodations on Maui, and pause further development of new hotels, timeshares, short-term rental homes, and transient vacation rental units, for two years or until tourism management measures are implemented. A moratorium would give us time to address Maui’s overtourism issues. Maui Tomorrow strongly supports this bill.

Unfortunately, on December 22nd, Mayor Mike Victorino vetoed the bill. The County Council still has a chance to pass it, if they override the mayor’s veto with six votes when they meet this Friday, January 7th at 9:00am.
