General Plan Committee to conduct informational meeting on growth plan

WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Maui County Council’s General Plan Committee will conduct an informational meeting on growth boundaries included in the draft Maui Island Plan on Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber, Committee Chair Gladys C. Baisa announced today.

For the past year, the Committee has been reviewing policies and text in the first seven chapters of the ten-chapter draft Maui Island Plan. Next Thursday’s meeting will include a presentation from the Department of Planning on Chapter 8 of the Maui Island Plan, entitled “Directed Growth Plan,” Baisa said.

Chapter 8 of the Maui Island Plan includes maps that would establish the first urban and rural growth boundaries. No legislative action on the maps or narrative elements of Chapter 8 will be considered at the meeting, Baisa said.

“Before we deliberate on maps and growth boundaries, we need to have this information-only meeting to allow Council members and the public to get oriented on the proposed Directed Growth Plan,” Baisa said.

She added that future meetings will be scheduled to allow the Committee to review maps and vote on growth boundaries, with each of those meetings likely focused on a single community plan area. Baisa encouraged members of the public to testify at the meetings in which their own area’s maps will be considered.

The meeting is open to the public. Meeting agendas are available on the General Plan Committee website. To receive meeting agendas via e-mail, please complete the on-line subscription form on the County website at www.mauicounty.gov.
