Upcountry Workshop for the Maui Island Plan
The General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) is now reviewing the Maui Island Plan. It will be holding two upcountry meetings on the Island-wide Plan in mid June. The GPAC is seeking community and public input on the Draft Plan which was prepared by the County Planning Department. GPAC Chair Tom Cannon stated. ‘We need to know what the residents want the future of Maui Island to be like."
To assist and prepare the public to make constructive suggestions and contributions, the Kula Community Association’s General Meeting on Tuesday, May 6, will have an exciting program, ‘Upcountry Workshop for the Maui Island Plan" at the Kula Elementary School from 7pm - 9pm. All upcountry residents, including Haiku, Kula, Makawao, and Pukalani, are urged to get involved.
County Planner David Michaelson, and upcountry GPAC members Warren Shibuya and Dick Mayer will first highlight the major components of the plan which includes maps, policies, and proposed actions. Residents will be encouraged to ask questions about the Island Plan so that they will be able to testify effectively the following month when the GPAC holds its "Upcountry "Public Workshop.
The proposed Draft Plan explores important issues, such as: desired types of communities, transportation, water-use, location of future developments, agricultural and rural lands, and the preservation of a high quality environment.
Kula Community Association President Gina Flammer said, "Let’s not have others tell us what changes should take place and what are the important issues. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our upcountry residents to look at planning issues that will go beyond the upcountry region to cover our whole island."
The Kula Community Association seeks to encourage both a deeper understanding of changes taking place on Maui and the creation of plans to prepare for our island’s future. It should be both an educational and pleasant evening with your neighbors! The usual great refreshments will be served. Call 878-1874 for information.
