WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Maui County Council’s General Plan Committee will conduct a meeting on proposed directed growth boundaries for the Makawao, Pukalani, and Kula areas on July 5, and for the Paia and Haiku areas on July 10, Committee Chair Gladys C. Baisa announced today. Both meetings will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chamber.

The General Plan Committee started its review of the Makawao, Pukalani, and Kula portions of the directed growth plan on June 12, and recessed its meeting to June 14, then June 19. Baisa noted that the Committee listened to six hours of testimony on the afternoons of June 12 and June 14, and began deliberations on June 19.

“Given the amount of public interest and the tough decisions facing the Committee, the Committee simply needs additional time to complete its review of these areas,” she said. “Going forward, it is essential for the Committee to take every opportunity to meet so that the Committee can give a sound recommendation to the Council in a timely manner.”

Baisa thanked the Council Chair, other Committee Chairs, and the members for their willingness to adjust meeting schedules and other work to give the General Plan Committee more time to meet. “I think we all realize how important this legislation is to the community,” Baisa said, “and we are committed to seeing the Maui Island Plan process through by the end of the year.”

“I encourage concerned property owners in these areas to submit written testimony, and to come and testify at the meetings. We are making difficult decisions on landmark legislation that will have long-lasting effects on the residents of this County. I can’t stress enough how important public input is to the Committee’s process,” Baisa said.

The meetings are open to the public. Meeting agendas are available on the General Plan Committee website.
