SPEAK UP!   Public meeting: July 23  9am at the county Building 200 S. High St. Wailuku where the Growth Boundaries for West Maui will be discussed.
THIS may be the only chance for public testimony.
 
What’s at stake? 
West Maui has around 3,000 units already approved and entitled in large subdivision projects that are not built out.
only around an additional 2,500-3000 new approved units are needed, according to County planners.
 
The County Planning Department proposed the lowest number of new units for West Maui: 3,100. 
GPAC proposed 5,900 and Maui Planning Commission proposed: over 6,400! 
The Council will hear from developers like Olowalu Town  wanting to add 1500 more units of new growt.
 Growth that County staff says is not needed in West Maui.

WHAT’S PROPOSED BY PLANNING DIRECTOR?
 
West Maui already has around 3,000 units already approved and entitled in large subdivision projects that are not built out.

Planning Director recommends for West Maui
 
1. entitlements for 3,100 new units:
a) 1800 units above Kaanapali Golf Course
b) 800 more units in Villages of Lei’ali’i (mauka of Post office)
c) 300 units of infill in Lahaina town
d) 200 units in the Wainee area (above county pool/ rec center) 
NO Development for OLOWALU.
NOTE: Olowalu Town supporters will be out in force to try to convince the Council to ADD IN Olowalu Town.
County Planners feel enough growth is already proposed for West Maui. What do you think?
 
2. Conversion of Ag subdivisions to RURAL for 896 acres (unclear if this will allow Ag lots to subdivide into more lots)
a) 424 ac at Plantation Estates in Honolua
b) 432 ac in Makila (Launiupoko Ag subdivisions and undeveled ag land) 
c) 40 ac in Ukumehame (existing Ag subdivision) 
 
NOTE: These types of “conversions” have been opposed by many community members in Central and Upcountry Maui, and most have been turned down by the Council 
 
3. Four Preservation Areas totaling around 700 acres: from Honolua to Ukumehame
a) Lipoa Pt/ Honolua Bay  255 ac
b) Moku’ula cultural preserve 6.5 ac of existing parks
c) Pali to Puamana Parkway along shoreline  around 250 acres
d) Kaanapali 2020 park/greenway system- 190 ac suggested, but greenbelts recommended by GPAC along gulches removed and Honokowai Cultual preserve not shown on maps.
